Latin @ PPA.

Learning the building blocks of our language and understanding.

Objective

The primary objective of the HS Latin program is to provide scaffolded formation in reading proficiency through the union of contextual, teacher-guided, reading fluency experiences in the classroom with an accessible grammar-based language lab component outside of the classroom in order to support a holistic understanding of the Latin language and engage students in reading great texts from the Catholic and Western tradition with increasing fluidity and precision.

Methodology

The approach to instructional methodology is two-fold.

Reading Fluency Experiences

In the classroom, for the first three years (Latin 1, 2, 3), students will engage in teacher-guided, interactive, reading fluency and writing experiences utilizing leveled readers which incrementally increase in word count, vocabulary, and complexity of grammatical structures, in order to build reading proficiency over time. The teacher will utilize supportive, contextual materials, lexicons, and pop-up grammar in order to create meaningful reading experiences for the students. In year 4 (Latin 4), students will engage in the reading and study of historic Latin texts from significant eras in Catholic and Western tradition.

Language Lab

Outside of the classroom, students will utilize an instructional program to engage with the structural, syntactical, and grammatical aspects of Latin words, phrases, and texts through brief video lessons and written exercises. The program language lab, is designed to accompany and support our natural method, reading-based program.
