What Does It Mean to Give Your Child
a Classical Catholic Education?
Everything. It means Everything.
“Dogma is actually the only thing that cannot be separated from education. It is education.”
The Foundation
Catholic Classical Education Is Not a Method. It's a Mission.
A Catholic classical school teaches children how to think - and why truth, goodness, and beauty matter in the first place.
Classical education has its roots in the great tradition of Western civilization, stretching back to ancient Greece and Rome, refined through the Catholic intellectual tradition, and preserved across centuries in the Church's schools, monasteries, and universities. The result is a curriculum that has produced some of history's greatest minds - from St. Thomas Aquinas to Dante, from Cardinal Newman to J.R.R. Tolkien.
At its core, Catholic classical education is about forming a soul. It recognizes that a child is not a data point or a future economic unit. A child is a person made in the image and likeness of God, destined for eternal life - and every lesson, every book, every moment of learning should orient them toward that end.
This is not nostalgia. This is not anti-modern. This is the most profoundly human form of education available to your family today.
The Structure
The Trivium: Education That Follows the Child
At Padre Pio Academy, our curriculum is built on the medieval Trivium - three stages of learning that reflect how children actually grow and develop.
I: Grammar
Grades K–5 · The Foundational Years
Young children memorize with ease, love patterns and rhymes, and take delight in facts. The Grammar stage capitalizes on this ability — filling the mind with the true stories of faith and heroic virtue, foundational knowledge, Latin roots, Catechism, and a joy in learning that will last a lifetime.
II: Logic
Grades 6–8 · The Reasoning Years
As children grow, they begin to question. They want to know why. Instruction during the Logic stage channels this energy into disciplined reasoning — informal logic, debate, higher order thinking, and the ability to examine an argument and identify fallacies. Faith doesn't fear questions. It answers them.
III — Rhetoric
Grades 9–12 · The Expression Years
A classical Catholic education produces young men and women who can stand in any room — any boardroom, any parish hall, any court, any town hall — and speak clearly, persuasively, and with conviction. The Rhetoric stage asks: Now that you know the truth, can you defend it?
The Distinction
Why Classical Catholic Is Different From Any Other School
There are good Catholic schools in Greater Cleveland. There are good classical schools. But a school that is both — authentically, rigorously, joyfully Catholic and classical — is rare. Here is the difference.
Conventional Education
Subjects are taught in isolation. Math is math. Religion is religion. Subjects aren’t integrated.
Standardized outcomes are designed around test performance and Common Core standards.
Faith formation is an add-on - a class period, a box checked.
Modern textbooks flatten history and avoid the hard questions.
Children are prepared to fill a role in the economy.
Catholic Classical Education at PPA
All subjects united in the pursuit of the single Truth - through the lens of faith and manifested in Jesus Christ.
Formation of the whole person: intellectually, morally, spiritually and physically.
Faith as the organizing principle of all learning - Mass, Confession, and Adoration.
Great books. Primary sources. The great conversation of western civilization, not a summary of it.
Children prepared to live a life of meaning, purpose, and eternal consequence.
For Every Parent Who Has Wondered
Is there a school that will love my child's questions - and answer them? One that will form their character, not just their transcript?
You send your child to school for thirty-plus hours a week. For twelve years. That's more waking hours than almost any other influence in their formation - more than Sunday Mass, more than dinner conversations, more than anything else you control. What those hours build matters more than most parents allow themselves to think about. Who is standing in front of your student and shaping their values matters even more. At PPA, it’s Authentically Catholic teachers.
Catholic classical education asks the question every parent is afraid to ask out loud: Who is my child becoming and who is shaping them?
Not what will they do. Not what score will they earn. Who will they be — when the pressure is on, when the culture pushes back, when they have to decide what they believe and whether they believe it enough to live it? Who will model the virtues integrity, fortitude, charity and perseverance for them?
At Padre Pio Academy, we believe that a student formed in truth, beauty, and goodness — who has read St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Augustine, who can reason logically and who has received the sacraments and knows why — is ready for whatever the world brings. They are prepared for eternity.
That is what we are building here, in Lakewood, Ohio. One student at a time.

Common Questions
What Families Often Ask Us
-
Catholic classical education is the formation of the whole child - intellectually, morally, spiritually and physically - using the medieval Trivium (Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric) and Quadrivium as its organizing structure, integrated with authentic Catholic theology, great works of Western literature, history and philosophy, and a rich sacramental life. It is a way of ordering all learning toward truth, goodness, and beauty - and ultimately, toward God.
-
A conventional Catholic school teaches the faith in a compartmentalized manner alongside a modern, standardized curriculum. At Padre Pio Academy, faith is the organizing principle of all learning. Every subject — math, literature, history, science, Latin - is taught through the lens of the Catholic faith. The curriculum follows the Trivium, which aligns to each stage of the child's development. And the sacramental life - daily prayer, regular Mass, Confession, and the sacraments are at its’ center.
