NEW STAFF NEWS - FALL ‘08

We are very excited to announce a couple of new staff members to the Padre Pio Academy community.

Fr. S. Michael Franz has also joined our staff. Fr. Franz has worked as a parish priest and hospital chaplain since his ordination to the priesthood in 1969. He is currently pastor of St. Stephen Church in Cleveland where he has served for the past 20 years. He has done graduate work in German studies at Stanford University. He holds several Masters Degrees, including a Master of Divinity from Our Lady of the Lake Seminary. Fr. Franz will be teaching religion and German to grades 5 & 6.

Also new to Padre Pio Academy, Mrs. Emily Cudnik will be on staff to offer speech therapy to students. Mrs. Cudnik, who is a professional speech pathologist, will work with students on a weekly basis. All students are eligible and the cost is included in the price of tuition. We’re especially happy to announce this news because speech therapy has always been a very sought after (and difficult to procure) resource for small schools.

Any parents still interested in joining our school should email info@pioacademy.org to set up an appointment with the Dean of Students. Our space is limited but we are still accepting applications. Contact us today!

Update — Gettysburg Field Trip

From Saturday July 2nd through July 4th, Padre Pio Academy’s 5th-8th grade classes filled the role of giddy amateur historians, and charged the Gettysburg battlefield. Arriving on Saturday evening, Students pitched the tents - not quite up to a true bivouac scenario. Sunday is when they truly began to explore the battlefield of momentous and saddening legacy.

They first attended Mass at the Shrine of St. Eizabeth Ann Seton; the 1st American born saint. Students were able to visit a museum dedicated to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton as well. Incidentally, the grounds of this shrine were a stopping point for both the Federal and Confederate forces, enroute to Gettysburg, just 10 miles north.

Next was the battlefield. They began at Little Round Top, site of the Federal flank and witness to Col. Chamberlain’s brave charge - where Students first began to see how infinitely valuable high-ground is when at war. They proceeded to the towering New York monument and then hiked about a mile to “Devil’s Den” - home to a horde of scattered boulders. Devil’s Den was a Student favorite, as they scampered and climbed the rocky crags.

Devil’s Den was followed by a driving tour and the Battlefield Museum. The Museum housed an amazing collection of cannon barrels, rifles, bayonets, pistols and sabres from the battle and the Civil War in general.

They returned to a soggy, rainy camp — many things were hung to dry. Students’ spirits were far from dampened. Chaperones huddled under shelter, while Students battled playing capture the flag.

Monday included the graveyard site of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, The Rupp House, The Peace Memorial and the sleepy drive back to Lakewood, Ohio.

The trip was a rousing success and the Chaperones are pleading, even louder than the Students, for the next such trip to soon be planned.

Thanks so much to Mr. Andrews and his planning, the Chaperones who made the trip possible, and the Students for their enthusiasm and good spirits!

Annual School Picnic

Friday, June 8th, Padre Pio Academy will be hosting its annual picnic at Clifton Beach. Grills are set to burn at 11:00 a.m. Parents and siblings are welcome to meet us at the beach. This will also be a wonderful opportunity to meet all of our new school families! Please join us as we close a very joyful and successful year!

May Crowning - Fatima Play

Grades 1 and 2 are busy writing and producing a short play on the events surrounding Our Lady’s apparitions at Fatima. They are learning about these important events and are planning to perform the play for other classes (and for Parents) on May 17th. Following the play, the Student body, Teachers, Staff and Parents will celebrate May Crowning. Families will receive written invitations to the performance and Crowning.

Choose Life! Luncheon

On May 4th, 2007, Padre Pio students once again assisted at the Choose Life! Luncheon. As part of the traditional service component of Padre Pio Academy’s program, students fulfilled duties to ensure the smooth run and success of the Luncheon. As true apostles, their decorum, comportment and love for life was visible to all in attendance. Thank you Padre Pio students for your charitable works!

Open House

Teachers and Staff were on hand to greet many families who attended our Open House on March 24th. Please feel free to call our office at 216 226-4854 to set up an appointment and tour of the school. Registration is open for school year 2007/2008!

Padre Pio Running Club

The Running Club is off to a great start with over a dozen students running last Friday, plus a few mothers (some runnning, some walking) and at least one dog! It is never too late to join in. We meet Wednesdays and Fridays at 3:00 p.m. at Memorial Field in the Valley (the first set of baseball diamonds from the Detroit Road entrance).

On hand to advise and encourage will be Dr. Charles Farrell, Mr. George Klier and Mr. Arthur Moore. Mr. Moore has completed over 552 marathons and ultra marathons. We hope to see there!

Gettysburg - Field Trip

Reservations for the Gettysburg trip have been made at Artillery Ridge Campground for Saturday, June 2nd through, Monday, June 4th
